Harry Potter
Prisoner of Azkaban Party Decorations
You'll have a lot of fun decorating for this party!
Use poster board to make signs for "Diagon Alley",
"Professor Snape's Potions class", "Alivan's Wand
Shop"
"Hagrid's Hut",
"The Great Hall".....match the locations to your activities.
If your feeling creative, sponge paint white sheets with
gray paint, to create stone walls. Then, hang the sheets on your walls
and windows.
Add
any of these items for more effects: Hang gaudy gold framed pictures or
mirrors (thrift stores or gold spray paint), gold and purple, streamers, Wizard hats,
large cauldron with steamy dry ice, broom sticks leaning against
the corners, make "house" banners with felt or poster board
the possibilities are endless!
Don't forget to welcome your party guests to Hogwarts School as they arrive.
BIRTHDAY PARTY GAMES
& ACTIVITIES
Alivan's Wand Shop
To make wands, collect short, dry sticks from your yard, or purchase wooden rods from a hobby store. Attach a feather, sprinkle with glitter, decorate with sequins or ribbon, etc. Let the children decorate their own special wand.
One mother we spoke to, gave the kids colored electrical tape to wrap
12 inch pieces of dowel. We liked this idea for neatness and the fact that there was no drying time.
Golden Snitch Craft Pin or Magnet

You'll Need:
White craft foam
Gold or yellow colored "pom - pom"
Hot glue gun or craft glue
Gold glitter, glitter glue or sequins
Pin backs or self sticking magnetic strip
Scissors (several pairs)
Trace the shape of the wings on the craft foam before
the party. The children will cut them out on their own.
The wings can be left white or decorated with glitter,
sequins or
glitter glue. Use craft glue or a hot glue gun to attach the pom-pom's and pin backs.
I recommend a hot
glue gun (adults only) for faster drying time.
HARRY POTTER PARTY GAMES
Sorting Hat Party Game
Introduce your guests to the fantastic world of Harry Potter as soon as they walk through the
door with this easy paper bag sorting hat. We used
a paper grocery bag
folded inside out, "bunch-up" into shape and then stapled. Place the hat
upon each guest's head as they enter the party room. To "go -all-out" ,
pre-record a voice repeating the houses; Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, Gryffindor, Slytherin, one by one, in any order you
choose.
It would be simpler however, to have someone holler from the
other room.
Before the party make several house badges with the names Slytherin,
Griffindor, Hufflepuff, and Ravenclaw. We've already made some for you
to print...click here to print.

Use a hole punch and yarn for children to wear the badges around their
necks. After the Sorting Hat has "spoken", give each child a badge
with
the name of their house.
"The Marauder's Map" treasure hunt
Divide the children into teams and give each team a map.
They must collect certain items along the way according to their map.
They will end up at Honeydukes, a store loaded with sweets; nougat, coconut ice, toffees, chocolates, Every Flavor Beans, Fizzing Whizzbees, Drooble's Best Blowing Gum,
Pepper Imps, Ice Mice, peppermint creames, sugar-spun quills and exploding bonbons...They
can even make some of their own!
Tip: Your local sweet shop will have a variety of candies in different
shapes and sizes to emulate the candies from
the book.
HARRY POTTER FAVORS AND
PRIZES
Keep in mind if you are making crafts, that these items will
be sent home with the kids as a favor. Other items could include: gummi
rats, Bertie Bott jelly beans, Harry Potter glasses, glow sticks,
stickers, glow sticks and Harry Potter coloring books with glitter crayons.
Harry Potter Party Recipes
Bewitching Brew
Your guests will be spellbound when they witness your ability to turn an ordinary beverage into an enchanted drink that crackles and spits! Simply pour your childs favorite beverage into glasses for all your guests. After you have placed a glass in front of each guest, add a few Pop Rocks candies to each one. Since this candy is processed with carbon dioxide, it will crackle, pop, and spit when it comes into contact with water, juice, soda pop, etc. (Pop Rocks is a registered trademark of the General Foods Corp.)
Magic Wand Pretzels
Prepare the night before the party.
Dip large pretzel sticks into melted white chocolate bark.
Then into colored sprinkles. Let them harden on waxed paper.
Chocolate Spiders
1 pound chocolate confectioners' coating
1 (8.5 ounce) package chow-mein noodles
Directions
1 Chop the chocolate confectioners' coating and place into a heatproof bowl over simmering water. Cook, stirring occasionally until melted and smooth. Remove from heat and stir in the chow mein noodles so they are evenly distributed. Spoon out to desired size onto waxed paper.
Cool completely before storing or serving.
Chocolate
Frogs
"Gummi" toad candies
Chocolate melting chips
Melt the chocolate pieces in the microwave or in a double boiler. Dip
the frogs into the chocolate and place on waxed paper. I found that the
frogs looked better if I dipped the hind quarters not the head. You
can also drizzle the chocolate on some of the
frogs instead of fully dipping them.
Wizard Hat Cupcakes

Make your own edible wizard hats with cupcakes, ice cream cones,
melted chocolate and yellow decorating frosting.
To dip the cones...
Melt your chocolate bark or "candy melts" (craft store).
Pour the melted chocolate into a shallow pan, such as a cookie sheet.
Gently roll the cones in the melted chocolate. Place the cones upside
down on a sheet of waxed , or parchment paper. All the chocolate to
harden completely before adding the lightening bolts and stars.
Place
the hats onto your frosted cupcakes and then use a decorating
tube to
make a ring around the bottom edge.
Tip:
Some of our readers have used fondant to cover the cones. We prefer
the chocolate method, because children prefer the flavor.
Make your own Harry Potter Birthday Cake
A simple sheet or round cake is much cheaper and tastier
than store bought. Top your cake with wizard hats, using frosted, or
chocolate dipped ice cream cones
and frosting stars add
a pair of plastic glasses!
Party Favors and Prizes
Send your guests home with
magic themed
party favors and prizes.
Create Wizard Hats with black card stock paper, a stapler and gold star
stickers. Fill the hat with some Jelly Belly jelly beans, an owl bean
bag, toy snitch, stickers etc. Harry potter toys and prizes are very
easy to find.
