TRAIN CAKE AND TREATS
A large sheet cake will be easy to make and decorate. Frost the cake with green frosting (grass) and
add a chocolate cookie crumb hill or two.
Top with a shoestring licorice tracks and a toy train.
If you are planning to serve lunch, serve simple sandwiches cut with
a train cookie cutter
and a plate of fresh fruit and veggies.
TRAIN PARTY GAMES AND ACTIVITIES
Select two or three activities to keep your party guests happy
and entertained. We suggest providing young children with a selection of
free play activities upon entering the party:
A mat with wooden Brio type trains, Coo-choo coloring books and crayons Play-dough, Duplo Blocks and puzzles work well. You may want to have an adult at each station. Station
play time should last about 15-20 minutes and then on to the group party games.
Making Train Tracks Craft Idea
This is a painting project, so be sure you provide smocks
and cover your
work space.

You'll Need:
Kids safe Paint
Construction paper - clue, green, red
Inexpensive toy trains (wood or plastic)
Empty and clean meat trays or baking sheets
Optional - cotton and glue
To make the project place a few trains in each paint color.
Give the
children their paper. Show them how to
"drive" the train in the paint to get the wheels covered with
paint.
Then, "drive" the train on the paper to make the tracks.
Variation: Cut the paper into the shape of trains
prior to
painting to make a special train picture.
Glue the trains onto another piece of paper and add
some steam using
cotton and glue.
Choo choo Course
Before the party, prepare several packing boxes, one per child,
decorating them to resemble train cars. Play special train music
and encourage the children to line up on your command...
"All Aboard". They will play follow the leader pretending to be a train.
Make train noises and movements. Set-up obstacles for them to go around, through and under.
This is a useful tool to utilize for transitions from one activity to
another i.e. activities, presents/goodie bags and
cake.
Bean Bag Toss
Make a train out of shoe boxes, keeping the tops off.
The children take turns tossing bean bags into the boxes.
Musical "Train Cars"
Play train music and have the kids climb into a car when the music stops. We don't recommend traditional competitive play for young train lovers...there should be enough boxes for all of the children.
The Conductor Says
instead of Simon Says
Find the Train:
You need a lot of string or colored yarn and enough small trains for everyone. Fasten a string to each of the toy trains. Hide them in various places in a room, winding the string around furniture and banisters as you go. Each person is given the end of a string and must untangle it to find
her prize. Each child who finishes can help the others find their prizes.
Candy trains work well for this game. See the photo at the top.
You'll need candy, gum and a low temp glue gun to complete the project.
Pin the Caboose on
the Train
Make a train using cardstock paper or poster board. Next, make several
red paper cabooses. Attach the train to the wall. Before the party,
attach some "sticky adhesive or double stick tape to each red caboose.
When play time arrives, each child will take a turn closing their eyes
and attempting to attach the caboose close to the end of the train.
For older kids...make a blindfold with an engineers bandana and spin
three times before applying the caboose.
Story Time
End the party with quiet story time of
The Little Engine That Could or another favorite story.
TRAIN PARTY FAVORS:
We've provided a selection of party favor ideas for you to choose from, depending on the age of
the children: A Golden or miniature Thomas the Tank Engine
Book,
or The Little Engine that could, playdoh with a train cookie
cutter, train coloring book, train stickers and a choo-
choo- whistle as well. Place all of the items into a blue/red engineer's bandana and tie
the corners
together.
Birthday in a Box offers wonderful
train party favor sets.
Everything is included to send your guests home with a smile!
